Activities of Daily Living: These activities are defined below that are measured to determine
a person's ability to function independently and are the main triggers for a long term care insurance claim.

The following are the Activity of Daily Living (ADL) associated with long term care insurance:                                                                                                            

  • Eating: Feeding oneself by getting food into the body from a receptacle such as a
    plate, cup or table to one's mouth.
  • Bathing: Washing oneself in either a tub or shower, washing by sponge bath including the task of getting into or out of the tub or shower.
  • Dressing: Putting on and taking off all items of clothing and any necessary braces,
    fasteners, shoes, or artificial limbs. 
  • Maintaining Continence: The ability to maintain control one's bowel and bladder functions or when unable to maintain control of bowel or bladder function, the ability to perform personal hygiene including caring for catheter or colostomy bag.
  • Toileting: Transferring to and from the toilet, getting on and off the toilet, and performing
    personal hygiene.
  • Transferring: Moving from a bed, chair or wheelchair.
