Long-Term Care Insurance for Same-Sex Federal Employees

The Federal government has just announced that it will provide long-term care insurance and the large spousal discount for same-sex, Federal employees, who are in a domestic partnership.  This is a new service that all gay and lesbian federal employees will likely welcome.  It will cover all Federal employees who wish to participate, including civil service, Postal Service, military and others.

We consider this a big breakthrough in the long term care industry, and will offer stability and comfort to those in domestic partnership relationships.

The fact that the Federal government is doing this is the big plus, in that it is recognizing the legitimacy of same sex relationships.  However, like all government programs it has its downsides.  Most critical is that, since it will have to cover most all employees who apply during open enrollment, the program will be covering a higher risk population, thus the insurance carriers will probably be forced to charge more than they would other applicants outside this system, who would be screened and healthier—thus lower risk.  The Federal Long Term Care Insurance plan has recently raised rates on existing policy holders up to 25%.  Simply put, If you have to cover everyone, the cost will be higher.

Since all the major long-term care insurance carriers have been offering this insurance for the past twenty years or so, in one sense the Feds are tardy in offering this service.  Of course, we are sure that politics have played a big part in this delay.  Therefore, if gay Federal employees desire this service, and are in reasonably good health, it will be to their advantage to bypass the Federal program and purchase their long term care insurance from other sources.
